How to Liberate America | Yes Magazine

American economy, image by Beverly & Pack

The dominant story of the current political debate is that the government is broke. We can’t afford to pay for public services, put people to work, or service the public debt. Yet as a nation, we are awash in money. A defective system of money, banking, and finance just puts it in the wrong places. Raising taxes on the rich and implementing financial reforms are essential elements of the solution to our seemingly intractable fiscal and economic crisis. Yet proposals currently on the table fall far short of the need.

The Insane Cost of Government | Uncommon Wisdom
Monday, July 11, 2011

Editor's Note: The American’s for Tax Reform Foundation’s Cost of Government Day Report is a mindbender. If this isn't a steady march towards national, corporate socialism then what?

The Cost of Government Day (COGD), the day of the calendar year on which the average American worker has earned enough gross income to pay off his or her share of the spending and regulatory burdens imposed by government on the federal, state, and local levels, is now August 19, the latest date ever recorded.

In simple language, it means that the average American must work 230 days, or 63% of the year, to pay for the full cost of government.

Thursday, June 23, 2011

Protect our Columbia River and prevent cancer in the children who will drink the contaminated water from the Energy Department's (USDOE's) latest plan to use Hanford as a National Radioactive Waste Dump for extremely radioactive wastes.

12,600 truckloads of extremely radioactive waste would come through Oregon and Spokane to Hanford, if Hanford is chosen as the national radioactive waste dump for extremely radioactive (GTCC) wastes.

Philosophical Musings on the Juxtaposition of the Words “Commercial” and “Food” | The Good Life
Friday, June 17, 2011
So, how did it happen? How did we all get complacent enough to accept the phrase "commercially produced food" without even blinking an eye? How did Uncle Sam go from advising the US public "to garden" to later telling the US public "to shop". And, not just to shop, but to shop for food. ... read more

Big Pharma attempting to corner the market on medical marijuana | Natural News
Sunday, May 29, 2011

As DEA raids and IRS harassment continue on state-approved medical marijuana, Big Pharma eyes the profitability of cannabis and prepares to muscle in, using its lobbyists and government connections to ensure a monopoly on legal sales of the drug.

In early April of 2011, two drug manufacturing giants, G.W. Pharmaceuticals and Novartis, announced they had formed an alliance to license and market GW’s Sativex, a liquid cannabis drug. The drug is already available in Great Britain, as well as Canada and Spain. The licensing agreement with Novartis will enable sales to expand into markets in Africa, Asia and the Middle East. FDA Phase III trials are still being organized for Otsuka, GW's partner for licensing Sativex for the US market.

Medical Marijuana Patients Sue Federal Government | SF Weekly
Monday, May 23, 2011

We all know that the wheels of government move slowly -- but nine years slowly? That pace is too lazy for Americans for Safe Access, which just wants answers. So it's going to court to force the federal government to get some response.

At issue is a petition filed Oct. 9, 2002, by the Coalition for Rescheduling Cannabis, a group of medical-marijuana patients and attorneys, which asked the Drug Enforcement Administration to drop marijuana from Schedule I, its list of most dangerous illegal drugs. This classification means a drug has zero medical value and a high potential for abuse.

Who's In Charge of Who's In Charge? | Notes from the Trail
Wednesday, May 18, 2011
The founders of the United States of America addressed this issue directly in the Declaration of Independence, putting forth the profoundly radical notion that the legitimacy of government rests on the consent of the governed. Furthermore, they declared that every free individual is sovereign (i.e., has the same rights as a king) with the same natural right to thrive as the grass has to grow. ... read more

The Idea of Enemies is Killing Us | Baltimore Chronicle
Friday, April 1, 2011
The Idea of Enemies is Killing Us | Baltimore Chronicle Consider this: The "enemies paradigm" and the perspective it represents are obsolete. We humans on this Earth are in the process of moving onward, beyond that worldview, into a different era. In the new era, there will still be groups of people we may see as our adversaries, but they will not be enemies. There will still be bad problems, but we will solve them more ably, working together with the people we used to think of as our enemies. In a globally internetworked world, we are all going to learn to do this because there’s no viable alternative. It begins with adopting a different mental map. ... read more

Cuccinelli's Health Care Challenge | New Republic
Thursday, March 31, 2011
Cuccinelli's Health Care Challenge | New Republic The day that President Obama's Affordable Care Act was signed, March 23, 2010, was also the day that the first challenges to the law were filed in federal court. Back then, the notion that health care reform could be overturned seemed remote. For one thing, it would require the Supreme Court to abandon decades of precedent. But nearly as big an obstacle, it seemed, was that the filer of the first suit to move forward was Kenneth T. Cuccinelli II, the attorney general of Virginia, a politician whose seven-year stint in the state legislature had earned him the nicknames "Crazy Cuccinelli" and "Kook-inelli." ... read more
