Learning Objectives: After this workshop the student will understand the historical basis for the current medical care system, and will be able to utilize the new paradigm of holistic care in their own practices, culturally and realistically looking for outcome-based evaluators for successful caring and healing of the unwell.
- Discuss historical theories from Hippocrates to Listor to today for explanation of illness.
- Show statistical clarification for causes of death, disease prevalence and cure rates in America, life expectancy rates, child mortality rates, and contrast todays rates.
- Discuss physical and emotional connection of common disease processes.
- Show documented studies of various aspects of the mind-body connection, and discuss historical and current attitudes towards the healing arts as health care in America.
- Identify immune response to disease process, trauma, stress and infection as well as the cellular reaction to various aspects of alternative health care, and the interaction of the holistic human to dis-ease.
- Review ethical, legal and logistical views of caring for the ill, elderly, and impaired. Discuss legal issues of control and the patient bill of rights, including the Do Not Resuscitate order, POLST form, Power of Attorney of Heath Care, Living Wills, HIPPA and the Oregons Physician-Assisted Dying law.
- Define and instruct concepts of Holistic Healthcare and the Healing Arts, in relation to non-traditional, alternative options, such as acupuncture, massage, therapeutic touch, visualization, medication, etc.
- Discuss uses of alternative medical options in practical, outcome-based care planning terms.
- Discuss physical symptoms of dying body and explain the physiological causes of each symptom, as well as palliative care, as utilized by hospice and palliative care teams, both at hospital & home-based settings.
- Identify symptom management tools to empower non-skilled caregivers to provide excellent care in the outpatient setting.
- Students will explore their own emotional response to the dying process, including contrasting the extending of life to the extending of the dying process.
- Discuss and explore touch versus technology, care versus caring.
- Participants will share their own thoughts on the changing paradigm from the paternalistic Doctors know best, to the belief that the patient should be the orchestrator and consumer of their own healthcare.
Vickie Roundy, RN, CHPN, has worked in nursing much of her life, with a start as a licensed nurses aide, medical assistant and medical office manager; earning a license in Practical Nursing in 1986, and her Registered Nursing degree in 1989. She was a founding member of the Asante Hospice at Rogue Valley Medical Center in Medford, Oregon in 1991, and has worked there for over twenty years. Vickie continues to actively train and educate health care providers through workshops and classes on holistic care of the dying at skilled nursing facilities, home care agencies, assisted living facilities and volunteer programs for hospice and palliative care. She has been nationally certified as a hospice and palliative care specialty nurse for over ten years, and has a special interest in comfort care, symptom management, and empowering the patient and caregiver. She is the author of Help Me Understand: caring and caregiving for the dying, a booklet for those striving to care for the dying in the home setting. This booklet has been used by numerous hospice and home care agencies nationwide.

The Wall Street Journal calls him "the best composer you've never heard of," but to choral music enthusiasts, Morten Lauridsen is a beloved and well-known artist. "Shining Night," a new film chronicling the composer's creative process and inspirations, is coming to Ashland on Tuesday, June 12, for one showing only at the SOU Music Recital Hall, and including a performance by the SOU Chamber Choir, conducted by Paul French.

Winner of the Best Documentary award at the DC Independent Film Festival (2012) and an Honorable Mention at the Los Angeles Movie Awards (2012), this visually stunning documentary, the filmmaking debut of musical artist Michael Stillwater, largely takes place at Lauridsen's home on the San Juan Islands. Inspired by the silence of nature, Lauridsen ( (a National Medal of Arts recipient and most frequently performed American choral composer), creates works of timeless beauty. Through the eyes of other composers, conductors, singers and music students, the story of Lauridsen unfolds - and his music is performed by Volti, the San Francisco Choral Society, Con Anima, and the Aberdeen (Scotland) University Choral Society, together with soundtracks from Polyphony, the Dale Warland Singers, and The Singers/Minnesota Choral Artists. Shining Night gives viewers a look into the private life of a remarkable artist.
Called 'the only American composer in history who can be called a mystic', Lauridsen creates music which opens perception to transcendent realms while providing a healing space for the losses in our lives. On Tuesday evening June 12, meet Morten Lauridsen and filmmaker Michael Stillwater, see this beautiful film, and hear Ashland's singers perform some of Lauridsen's music under the direction of conductor Paul French.
