Resource Center - Family

Family denotes a group of people affiliated by consanguinity, affinity or co-residence. Although the concept of consanguinity originally referred to relations by "blood," some anthropologists[who?] have argued that one must understand the idea of "blood" metaphorically, and that many societies understand 'family' through other concepts rather than through genetic distance.

It has been argued by many sociologists,[who?] anthropologists,[who?] philosophers[who?] and psychoanalysts[who?] that the main function of the family is to perpetuate society.[citation needed] Either socially, with the "social production of children", or biologically, or both. Thus, one's experience of one's family shifts over time. From the perspective of children, the family is a family of orientation: the family serves to locate children socially, and plays a major role in their enculturation and socialization. From the point of view of the parent(s), the family is a family of procreation the goal of which is to produce and enculturate and socialize children. However, producing children is not the only function of the family; in societies with a sexual division of labor, marriage, and the resulting relationship between two people, is necessary for the formation of an economically productive household.

Vision Statement and Purpose:

A loving family is the foundation for raising a child into a whole man, or whole woman. Our families, though torn and tattered, are still as important today as they were with our ancestors. Let us rebuild the family ties between generations. The well-being of an enlightened society can then follow our lead. Teach always a compassionate morality in the family, and an enlightened justice will begin to thrive. Thus our entire society prospers.

As Gibran wrote so eloquently, children are our arrows to the future, our promises and prayers for a better world. Teach your children well. All children are born with innate sovereignty and born free. They have their own hearts, minds and souls, and will demand internal authority over their lives. Our precious and beloved children deserve our love, honor and kindness as they will one day take us to unknown worlds, places their parents can never go.

"The life of children, as much as that of intemperate men, is wholly governed by their desires." – Artistotle

Elders and those of wisdom must serve, love and protect all the youth of each generation, or humanity is truly lost. Our efforts today will multiply a thousand-fold in a better world soon to be.

"Let us put our minds together and see what kind of life we can build for our children"
- Sitting Bull
